Alpha
(a course that asks, "is there more to life than this?")
![]() |
Over 11 million people worldwide have now attended an Alpha course, running in tens of thousands of churches of all denominations, and at universities, prisons, and on military bases across the world. The mood is light and inclusive. In Northern Ireland, for example, there are Roman Catholics entering Protestant churches to attend Alpha. "Who Attends Alpha?"Everyone is welcome! People attend from many different backgrounds. They attend for a variety of reasons. Some want to investigate whether God exists and if there is any meaning to life; others are concerned with what happens after death. Still others may have attended church all their life, but feel they have never understood the basics of the Christian faith. A few churches have made attending an Alpha course a requirement for membership. "What Happens at Alpha?"The typical Alpha evening begins with a light meal. This time for fellowship is followed by a talk on several common questions beginning with who Jesus is and ending with how to make the most of the rest of your life. Other weekly topics include how to pray, read the Bible, find guidance and faith, resist evil, and tell others. Mid-course there is a special full day (Saturday) on the who, what and how of the Holy Spirit. Alpha is the course for everyone who thinks there may be more to life than meets the eye.Note: There is no obligation to attend all ten sessions and there is no cost for the course. Childcare is provided. |
